Turn contributor requests into repository invitations

When a contributor request arrives, Notis can use supplied identity details for enrichment and invite the specified GitHub account to the repository you name.

Trigger

Webhook received

Notis starts this workflow when an external tool or custom backend sends an HTTP request.

Action

Add a repository collaborator

Adds a github user as a repository collaborator, or updates their permission if already a collaborator; `permission` applies to organization-owned repositories (personal ones default to 'push' and ignore this field), and an invitation may be created or permissions updated directly.

Why this helps

Contributor access requests can stall between identity checks, repository context, and manually sending an invitation.

  • Moves a specified contributor request into a GitHub collaborator invitation.
  • Keeps repository access requests tied to the incoming context.
  • Reduces repeated handoffs for routine contributor onboarding.

Setup

Build it in a few focused steps.

  • 1Connect Api Ninjas and GitHub once in the Notis portal.
  • 2Create an automation in the portal or tell Notis from any channel.
  • 3Describe which supplied GitHub username and repository to use, and what Api Ninjas data should inform the request, in one instruction.
  • 4Choose a webhook trigger and select where run reports should go.
  • 5Test with one real request for a repository where you have admin access.

Questions about this workflow

Does Api Ninjas determine a person's GitHub username?

Do not assume it can. Supply the GitHub username and repository in the request or instruction; use Api Ninjas only for relevant enrichment supported by the supplied data.

What happens when the user is not already a collaborator?

GitHub may create an invitation. The authenticated user needs the required repository permissions.

Can this change a collaborator's permission?

For organization-owned repositories the permission parameter can apply. Personal repositories default to push and ignore that field.
